How to resize a partition?
What is Partition Genius?
Partition Genius tool can help you quickly and easily create partitions on your hard disk for storing valuable information such as data files, applications, and operating systems. Storing information in separate partitions helps you organize and protect your data, safely run multiple operating systems, and reclaim wasted disk space.
Partition Genius enables you to secure your data by physically separating it from other files. Separate partitions also make backups to networks and removable drives easy.
When should you use partition resizing?
Do you want to enlarge the size of a designated partition to hold some large files? Do you want to reduce it to save hard disk space for new partition? Relax. All these problems can be easily solved by the tool of Partition Resizing in powerful Partition Genius.
Procedure of resizing partition:
- To begin, please double click Spotmau icon and enter PowerSuite 2009’s interface, follow these steps: Self Service —>PowerSuite 2009 Wincare—> Partition Genius, then you can have the interface looked just like the followed picture.

The general condition of hard disk(s) (including capacity, free space, and so forth) will be shown on the interface in a list and a block area as above.
2. You can select a designated volume by clicking it either in the list or in the block area.

The functions button on the top of interface is also listed in the pop-up menu when you right click the designated volume in the block area.

3. Firstly please right click the designated one in the block area, and choose “Resize…” This time we take F: for example.

4. Before resizing:

5. Let’s have a look at how to increase the size of a partition. This dialog will be shown after you begin the resizing operation.

Tips:
a. To increase the designated partition, it is necessary that one of the adjacent areas of it is unallocated. Otherwise, increasing the partition won’t be successful.
b. Technically, you can increase the partition from the beginning or the end of it, however, it actually depends on whether there’s adjacent unallocated area. In this case, there’s no unallocated area at the beginning of F: but at the end of it. Therefore we can only increase it from the end. Moreover, the unallocated area belongs to extended partition cannot be added to primary partition.
c. In the case as the following picture, as the unallocated area between (C : ) and (F : ) belongs to an extended partition, you can only add it to (F : ) which is also in the extended partition, instead of (C : ) which is a primary partition. Only when the unallocated part like the one on the right side in the following picture can be added to

6. You can specify the intended size in the “Resize Partition” dialog.
(Attention! The number you set is the new size of the designated partition, not the new space you add to the existing partition.) The available size is determined by the size of adjacent unallocated area.

7. Click “OK” and you will see the progress of resizing. Please wait for a few seconds.

8. When the operation is completed, you can see the two new partitions on the interface like this:

9. Let’s move forward to reducing partition:
please specify the intended size for the designated partition. (Attention! The number you set is the new size of the designated partition, not the new space you cut off from the existing partition.)
Tips: The size of new volume you specified is not necessary the exact size of it, but they are more of less the same. (E.g. in this case, we specified the size as 500Mb, and we get 494Mb.) Thus, it is recommended that you shall set a relatively larger size than what you estimate when increasing a partition.

Notes: If you choose “Reduce partition in the beginning”, the space you reduce will be cut off from the beginning.
10. Click OK and you will see the progress of resizing. Please wait for a few seconds.

11. When the operation is completed, you can see the two new partitions on the interface like this:

Tips: The space you reduce becomes unallocated.
NOTES:
If you want to learn more about partition, you can turn to User Manual where you can find detail and useful information related to partition, such as the type of partition, file system, and so on.
